Brighter Green associate Wanqing Zhou was referenced in Betty Richardson’s That’s Mag article, “How China’s Growing Appetite for Meat Affects Us All.”
The article discusses China’s growing desire for beef and the impacts of China becoming the world’s second largest beef importer. With this growing demand, China is raising more cattle and also importing more beef. These increases take a toll on the environment and also means more industrialized farming. They refer to Brighter Green’s discussion paper, The Triangle, by Wanqing Zhou which illustrates the impact of factory farming between China, Brazil, and the U.S. If they continue to grow at the present rate, the impact of intensive factory farmed meat will render “effectively unbearable” pressures on natural resources. The article also quotes the recent work from our partner organization Global Forest Coalition and their paper, “What’s at steak? The real cost of meat.”
