Please join us for a conversation on the state of animal agriculture and advocacy for farm animal welfare and rights in South and East Africa with Tozie Zofuka, internationally recognized animal activist visiting New York from Cape Town, South Africa, and Mia MacDonald, executive director of Brighter Green. Tozie will speak about his work on farm animals in southern Africa, his perspective on advocating for animal welfare and rights in Africa, and the development of the Pan African Animal Welfare Alliance (PAAWA), which he chairs. Mia MacDonald will discuss her experience visiting the first egg factory farm in Kenya, which she wrote about in Satya magazine’s recently published 21st anniversary special issue, The Long View.

Tozie Zokufa has worked in South Africa as a meat inspector and a veterinary public health practitioner. For the past nine years, Tozie has collaborated with Compassion in World Farming, World Animal Net, Africa Network for Animal Welfare, Cape Animal Welfare Forum, Humane Society International, Humane Education Trust, Animal Voice, and World Animal Day. Currently, he serves as chair of the Pan African Animal Welfare Alliance (PAAWA), vice chairman of Soil for Life, and program manager for Humane Society International’s farm animal department.

Mia MacDonald is the executive director and founder of Brighter Green. She has published many articles in popular and environmental media, authored a number of policy papers and reports, and contributed to four books, including Nobel Peace Laureate Wangari Maathai’s best-selling autobiography, Unbowed. She is a Senior Fellow of the Worldwatch Institute and has taught in the human rights program at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs and the environmental studies department at New York University.
