On May 22nd, the China Vegan Society (CVS) hosted its launch event at the Butterfly Resort in Dali, Yunnan, China. Supported by our colleagues at the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation, CVS is the first national alliance of vegan activists in China which serves the community, builds solidarity, pushes boundaries, and connects with vegan activists around the globe. Despite a series of earthquakes that started on May 18th, the event was still held and well received by the 100 attendees.
The launch kicked off with a founding ceremony and comments from prominent leaders and scholars, including Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of the China Green Development Council; Prof. Liang Qizi, renowned historian; Peter Singer, author of Animal Liberation and an internationally renowned philosopher; renowned English primatologist and animal rights advocate, Dr. Jane Goodall; and Brighter Green executive director Mia MacDonald.
The CVS event also included a UN Food Systems Summit China Dialogue on the role of the plant-based movement, the launch of Meatless Monday China, a series of workshops, and a vegan market.
We look forward to learning from and staying connected with the China Vegan Society, and to sharing more updates about their work here.
